Summer Crime Prevention Initiative

About the Summer Crime Prevention Initiative

Since 2010, each summer MPD has identified four to six areas that have experienced a high density of violent crime, specifically homicides and other gun-related incidents. Throughout the summer months, MPD then focuses all available resources, utilizes the latest crime-fighting technology, and calls upon partner agencies and organizations to assist in a coordinated effort to eliminate violent crime in these areas.

The six identified focus areas for the 2021 Summer Crime Prevention Initiative (SCI) include:

  • Potomac Gardens (First District)
  • Rosedale/Carver-Langston (Fifth District)
  • Greenway/Fort Dupont (Sixth District)
  • Marshall Heights/Benning Ridge (Sixth District)
  • Washington Highlands (Seventh District)
  • Douglas/Shipley (Seventh District)

How It Works

In each designated area, enhanced uniform to make contact with the community membersand reach out to repeat offenders.

Police Department and federal law enforcement partners, the Department of Justice and US Attorney’s Office, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, DC Housing Authority, and a host of nonprofit and private organizations are committed to making the program a success. The  SCPI uses a variety of patrol methods, investigative methods and technology.

SCPI efforts will be focused in the following five areas.  These areas were selected after careful analysis of shootings and other violent crimes that have occurred  in the area or close proximity to the area.  Maps for each are provided in PDF format
